If you’re trying to find your own ring size or that of your partner, this guide tells you all you need to know. Of course, the easiest and best way is to pop along to your local jeweller to have your finger sized professionally. If you are in Glasgow, please do call in to our store in the Argyll Arcade. However, we appreciate that this is not always possible or convenient. Thankfully, there are several ways you can find your ring size from the comfort of home.

How to Find Your Own Ring Size

There are two easy ways to find your own ring size. Firstly, using a ring you already own. Secondly, measuring your finger with our downloadable sizer.

1. Measuring A Ring You Already Own

If you already own a ring that you want to check the size of, you can use our Downloadable Guide. Simply the print the document on A4 paper and ensure you don’t have ‘Fit to page/printable area’ selected. Place your ring over the sizing circles until you find a circle that aligns with the inside circumference of your ring. This is the size of your ring.

2. Measuring Your Finger

If you don’t have a ring that fits you perfectly, you can measure your finger at home using our cut-out sizer. Simply print our Downloadable Guide (as above) and cut around the sizer image at the bottom of the page. Carefully cut a slot where indicated next to the arrow (a sharp knife might be best for this). Place the sizer around your finger and then gently pull the end through the slot you have cut into the sizer. Pull the end so that it fits comfortably around your finger. Then read the letter that the arrow points to. This is your ring size. Be careful not to pull the sizer too tightly as this will give the wrong size. Also, ensure the sizer can slide over your knuckle comfortably.

If you prefer, you could use our UK Ring Size Chart instead. Simply use a sewing tape measure to measure the circumference of your finger in mm. Then compare the measurement with the chart to obtain your ring size.

How to Find Your Partner’s Ring Size

If you’re buying a ring as a surprise gift for a partner, it’s a good idea to try to get an indication of their finger size. Here are some suggestions as to how you can go about this.

Borrow A Ring

If they have a ring they already wear, you could borrow it and take it into a jeweller to be sized. Bear in mind that the engagement/wedding ring finger is the third finger on the left hand.

Guess It - based on their Body Size

Fingers are proportionate to body size so if your partner is petite, it’s likely that their fingers are small and slender. Start at size H or I for women and around size N for men. If they’re more average in height, they’re likely to have an average sized finger too. The average finger size is L½ for women and Q for men. However, if they’re above average height or build, start at around size N for a woman and size T for a man.

Use Your Own Finger

Slide a ring they already wear onto your own ring finger and mark with a pen where it gets stuck. Pop into a jeweller and ask them to size your pen mark. You’ll get a very close size.

Use String

If possible (and this won’t be easy to do subtly!), wrap a piece of string around their finger. Mark it with a pen when it meets. Then use a ruler to measure the string and use our UK Ring Size Chart to check the size. Be careful not to stretch the string!

How Should a Ring Fit?

A ring should always feel comfortable. It needs to be big enough to fit over your knuckle with ease but small enough that it won’t fall off. Ideally, it should remain in position without spinning around on your finger. Also, it’s important that it allows for the natural changes in finger size that happen throughout the day due to hydration, hormones, weather and more.

Helpful Hints for Ring Sizing

DO
• Consider how wide the band is. A thick band (one that is 7mm or more) will feel tighter than a slender band. Size up a full size if the band is thick.
• Consider whether your knuckle is much larger than the base of your finger. If so, take two separate measurements of both and choose a size in-between.
• Ask for help! Contact James Porter by phone at 0141 221 5855, by email at enquiries or via our contact form. We will be delighted to assist.

DON’T
• Worry about getting the size wrong if you’re proposing or giving a ring as a gift. If you can get close, that’s great. However, you’re unlikely to get it right first time. It’s thought that around 40% of all engagement rings are resized.
• Size your finger when your hands are cold as your finger could be half a size smaller. Fingers expand and contract based on temperature so try to do it at average room temperature. Also, the end of the day is the best time as fingers are likely to be at their largest.
• Measure your finger after drinking alcohol or consuming a lot of salt as these can both make your fingers swell.
