A BRIEF HISTORY
The G-Shock Origin story begins back in 1981 when Kikuo Ibe, the then head watch designer at Casio, had a longing wanted to make an unbreakable watch, especially when dropped. The small team of engineers had three key design criteria, the watch had to be able to withstand a 10 meter drop and 10 atmospheres of water pressure, and it had to have a battery life of ten years. This was called the triple ten.
As gravity was the force that typically damaged a dropped watch, he settled on the name G-SHOCK.
“Never give up”, the mantra of Kikuo Ibe, resulted in two years of drop-testing ideas, and prototypes before what was then known as “Team Tough” created a design and architecture that withstood the forces and survived as designed, the DW-5000C was born!
The DW-5000C wasn’t an immediate success, but after an inspired advert on US TV where the watch subscribed for a Ice Hockey puck, the legend was truly born!
In order to stay relevant, new technologies where regularly introduced such as equipping watch with radio-controlled and solar- powered technologies, and other model that could receive time-calibration radio signals from six stations worldwide.
Though the 1990s the aesthetic evolved, the 200m capable Frogman diver was introduced in 1993. Premium models, such as the metal cased MRG series arrived in 1996. The millennium gave birth to the Tough Movement, solar-powered radio-controlled timepieces. 2012, the 30th anniversary of the brand saw the Smart Access system introduced.
In recent years, further new technologies were introduced, such as the hybrid time acquisition system, allowing it to receive time- calibration signals from both GPS satellites and six radio transmitters worldwide. In 2017 the Gravitymaster launched featuring the Connected Engine 3-Way module, where both radio wave and GPS satellite time calibration signals combined with connecting to timeservers by pairing with a smartphone for the most accurate system to date.
In recent years, advanced smart phone integration, Bluetooth and wireless protocols have been introduced keeping G-Shock relevant and contemporary.
