Colour has been an influential and continuous attribute of NOMOS since day one. Its omnipresence has been implemented from seconds hands and hour markers to power reserve indicators and complete dials in a suitably proprietary fashion. While some lesser-known models in the lineup were early to embrace colour fully, the total adoption has taken numerous years to transition to cornerstone models, with the Club being the most notable advocate. The recent Campus Future Orange and Deep Pink Club models have benefited from generous injections of colour, suggesting that this is more than an experiment for the Glashütte watchmaker.

These bold expressions draw new air into this continuously fresh and dynamic series, with the latest models announced today showing that NOMOS are all in on colour for the long haul.

The NOMOS Glashütte Club Campus Cream Coral and Electric Green

Bursting on the scene in the late 2000s, the Club is one of the youngest offsprings of this already youthful watchmaker's lineup. Its junior age is one it carries proudly, with a well-rounded lineup that caters to all tastes. Whether it's the recently introduced Club Sport featuring a metal bracelet, 300m water resistance rating, and thickly placed hour markers, or the ultra muted Campus 38 in Absolute Gray, the Club has yet to dawdle on developing variety. Today the next chapter of the Club's story is written, with two new colours, Cream Coral and Electric Green, joining the permanent collection and, without giving the game away before I've even had the opportunity to delve deeper, this pair exemplifies the vibrant and playful narrative of the Club.

Even though the sole aspect of these watches that is definitively new is their dial colours, sometimes that's enough, and that's the case here with everything else that makes the Club great remaining unchanged. Both colours are available in the 36 and 38 (which actually measures 38.5mm) sizes of the Club. They maintain their all-polished exterior accented by sharp, angular lugs and a lovely rounded bezel that seamlessly blends into the case body. In a similar vein, the dial configuration of these eye-catching new releases is just as we like them, with the sub-seconds at six sitting sunken on the dial, the California markers (or 'bilingual' in NOMOS speak) endure, and the Superluminova-filled pencil watch hands preserve their polished appearance.

Movement & Sizing

Clocking in at just 2.6mm in height is a certified classic NOMOS calibre, the Alpha. Manually wound with 43 hours of autonomy, Glashütte ribbing, perlage, tempered blue screws, and rhodium-plated surfaces, it's dependable excellence by NOMOS that delivers without a hiccup. It's also a crucial factor in the 36mm and 38.5mm sizes being able to measure only 8.2mm and 8.5mm in thickness, respectively. Be it the Cream Coral or Electric Green, each piece is fitted to velour leather grey straps that aid significantly in the versatility of these colours.

Some early personal thoughts

NOMOS has been drip-feeding the colourful Club concept for some time now, and although the aforementioned Future Orange and Deep Pink lean into boldness, these latest expressions are a touch more humbly inclined.

In the flesh, they harbour pastel-like tones that are not exactly traditional but are certainly more reserved than the conspicuous colours that came before them. The Cream Coral (seen here in the 36 size) has a lovely peach tone in the flesh, with the Electric Green (this time in the 38 size) providing an explosion of pastel green. Each dial carries a very fine and light grain texture, enabling the colours to play with light and shade.

For the Electric Green, it shifts from a soft forest green hue in the shade to a bold and vivid pastel in the light. The Cream Coral, on the other hand, tells a more unassuming story, shifting from a shaded orange to a bright peachy salmon-like colour. We've heard about and seen numerous dial textures lay claim to the 'ever-shifting appearance' trait, but these examples are unusual as no dependence on sunburst texture or depth by guilloché is necessary to achieve this. All of this is to say that these dials are far from one-dimensional.

Furthermore, no matter the size or colour you opt for, the second-hand remains orange, as do the mint green surrounds for each marker. Naturally, this decision impacts each dial differently, with the Cream Coral markers creating a more striking and contrasted appearance, whereas on the Electric Green, they almost blend into the dial. It's an intelligent play by NOMOS, as the Green is already plenty punchy and exciting, whereas the Coral could have easily felt washed out and lacking sharpness without this touch.

Although it's mainly the new dial colours we're exploring today, it seems only fitting to comment on how well the Club series as a whole feels on the wrist. The 2mm difference in lug-to-lug length is arguably more impactful than the difference in width, as the 36mm Club measures 46mm between each set of lugs, whereas the 38.5mm clocks in just over 48mm. Throw in its rounded bezel, and the result is two very comfortable and distinctive pieces that are suitable on my 7-inch wrist. The lugs are not just proportionally alert to their length, but they're also curved downwards slightly to hug the wrist from the back, and due to their slightly wider form than the lugs found on pieces such as the Tangente, there's a greater sense of overall balance. This type of attention to detail separates the good watches from the great ones.

Also of note is how near the hands and dial are to the crystal. It might not be something hugely apparent at first, but by cutting down on this space, the clarity of the watch skyrockets, which in real-world terms means that no matter the severity of the viewing angle, it's still possible to read the time perfectly clearly. Quality of life details like those deserve to be called out when executed properly.

NOMOS is one of the most compelling multi-dimensional watchmakers at their price point who aren't ones to rest on their laurels. Bauhaus expressive minimalist, unusual approaches to colour and in-house watchmaking demonstrate that NOMOS have plenty to offer. These two new colours communicate the brand's alertness to providing various expressions and ideologies of what a colourful watch can be without exclusively defaulting to bold and brazen. The Electric Green certainly has a potent side, but like the Cream Coral, it can appear refreshingly softened. With these new releases, NOMOS has extended its relationship to colour adjacent to the expected direction. It seems colour is about to be a serious thing for NOMOS, and something makes me think we're only just touching the surface of what's to come.
